On April 11th, 2018 the International Criminal Court the Serbian Vojislav Seselj guilty of war crimes he committed during the Yugoslavian Civil War in the early 1990s. Seselj was found guilty of inciting hate crimes by his nationalist speeches in which he argued for a “Greater Serbia” (A goal of Serbian Nationalist since the 1840s. This case was the first time in which UN court’s found an individual guilty of war crimes for speech. This relates to the course as under Ottoman control Serbia was subjugated following the Battle of Kosovo in Kosovo Polje and Bosnia was slowly “Islamified” over time. The ethnic cleansing and tension during and after the Kingdom of Yugoslavia fall could be considered an Ottoman legacy in the Balkans.
