This article explores Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s claim that a decade-old archive of stolen Iranian nuclear plans constitute evidence that Iran has been lying about its efforts to build nuclear weapons all along. Netanyahu says that Israeli spies found the documents in a “secret warehouse” in Tehran in January of this year, and that they show that Iran deceived the International Atomic Energy Agency’s inquisition into its nuclear program years ago. His presentation comes at a highly sensitive time for Iran/US relations as President Trump is currently deciding whether to pull the US out of its 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. But we are left wondering why Israel would want to interfere in the Iran/US relationship at this particular point in time if the documents were discovered four months ago. Iran’s deputy foreign minister has called Netanyahu’s claims “childish” and “ridiculous.”
