Oil Diplomacy in Saudi Arabia

Lower oil prices may mean that Saudi Arabia no longer dominates in oil production. The United States, Russia, and China are all hoping for a slice of the pie, which means some very interesting diplomatic maneuvering must take place. For example, even though Russia and Saudi Arabia support different sides in the Syrian civil war, Putin’s Russia has made moves to promote energy deals with Saudi Arabia. China wants not only to import oil as its own oil production declines but wants Saudi Arabia to invest in its petrochemical and refinery industries. And President Trump has called for the proposed initial public stock offering of Saudi Aramco, a deal potentially worth hundreds of billions of dollars, to be listed on the New York stock exchange.

Israel’s anti-athan bill allows police to storm mosques

Government officials in Israel are planning to propose a bill into parliament that would give police the power to break into mosques. The purpose of breaking into mosques would be to silence the Muslim call to prayer. Police would be able to break into mosques in Israel and Jerusalem and confiscate loudspeakers. The article states that this is a move towards suppressing religious freedoms. The bill is described as being a racist bill. It seems as if it part of a plan to suppress and erase the identity of Palestinians in Israel.

The Media Spin: Egypt’s dilemma

Original title: The role of local media in the Egypt’s upcoming presidential elections.

LINK

In this article from the Egypt Independent, Taha Sakr breaks down the spin of the Egyptian media and the apparent nature of “not-so-free-media” Since the Arab-spring which deposed Mubarak and brought-in Morssy. Eventually leading to a army coup and the installation of Sisi. Now with the presidential election coming up in March, the author has taken a stance on the upcoming election; namely “the only two candidates that are running, namely President Sisi and Al-Ghad party head  Mousa Mustafa Mousa.” Sakr then goes through all the different canidates that had ambitions to run for president of Egypt. Sami Anan, one of these canidates, was criticized emmensly after he annouced his intention to run, by media, specifically an opinion piece titled “Sami Anan: candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood”, Something that clearly shot any chances he had of a successful presidential campiagn. A human rights lawyer and another potential presidential canidate, dropped out of the running after facing criticism from state-run media outlet Al-Gomhuria, denoucing him as a paid puppet for the EU, and someone who was obsessed with authority. Another presidential hopeful was based on a private-tv-show as being ” not the appropriate man to lead Egypt.” In summary, the Egyptian presidential will likely see a 2nd Sisi term, and with the underlying worry of another presidential dynasty, such as Egypt saw during the years of Mubarak . We will see what the elections have in store for us in March.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-43051249

Israeli police say they have enough evidence to indict Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of “bribery, breach of trust and fraud”. Netanyahu is facing corruption charges for allegedly receiving positive press from an Israeli newspaper in exchange for “reining in” a rival publication. Additionally, Netanyahu is being accused of excepting lavish gifts from a Jewish Hollywood mogul in exchange for passing a law that would make Jewish Americans returning to Israel exempt from paying taxes for ten years. These are just a few of the corruption charges Netanyahu is facing although he denies any wrong-doing. The investigation/case could take up to a year to resolve.

Bannon’s Final Fury

Original Title:  New Book on Trump Reveals Plan to Cede Control Of West Bank and Gaza To Jordan and Egypt

URL: LINK

In the new book written by Micheal Wolf,  Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, there are several different areas that have come under scrutiny since the release of this controversial book. From what the news article says as well as what the book is quoted as saying, it was Steve Bannon’s idea to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, It was not however, Bannon’s plan to appoint Jared Kushner as the the “czar” of the middle east peace process. This later created much speculated conflict between the two senior advisers to the president.  Apparently, Bannon wanted to move the American embassy to Jerusalem on the first day that president Trump came into office. The embassy move has been announced and a visit by vice-president Micheal Pence has verbally sealed the deal.  the second event that is discussed in Micheal Wolf’s book is the transfer of land from Palestinian control to Egyptian and Jordanian control. Bannon is written as saying that   Egypt would take control  of the Gaza Strip and Jordan would take the West Bank. One of these events have already occurred. Will president Trump announce “The Bannon Plan” or will he not take any further action in the Middle East?  One thing is for certain, any idea of Trump’s ideas for Middle East Peace are either not written about or are undersigned. Perhaps Trump has no clear opinion on matters pertaining to the Middle east.

How to Restore US Credibility in the Middle East (Op-ed)

https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/31/opinions/iran-america-deal-opinion-oren/index.html

This op-ed offers ways the US might improve its credibility in the Middle East. Many Arab nations believed that the US was/is “secretly allied” with Iran based on its tolerance of the nation and supporting Iran’s desire to have nuclear materials–even if only authorized for power and research purposes– and its failure to offer support the 2009 Green Revolution and to punish ayatollahs who support terror (outside of sanctions). If the US takes a stronger stance against these issues and continues to stay out of the Iran nuclear deal, it may restore some of this lost credibility. *These opinions are those of the author, I am merely sharing the article.
