The Breadwinner (2017)

The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated movie with the main character 11 year old girl, Parvana, living in Kadul under the Taliban’s rule in 2001. The movie goes over how Parvana’s father gets wrongfully arrested, and how she must disguise herself as a boy, to get supplies for her mother, sister, and baby brother. With being disguised as a boy, Parvana searches around for a way to get her father back home.

Honestly this is a very good movie (in my opinion), I recommend you watch it. (Caitlyn Edwards)

“The Unified New Turkic Alphabet” (1928)

I found this chart while learning about the Latin alphabet reform introduced in Turkey under Atatürk. It helps visualize how the Turkish writing system shifted from the Arabic script to a Latin-based alphabet.

What stood out to me is that this idea actually goes back further than Atatürk- it was first discussed by the Young Turks almost 70 years earlier, but it wasn’t fully implemented until the 1928 reform. I can only imagine how divisive the language reform must have been for generations before and after.

Gallipoli from the Ottoman Perspective

During the lecture today about the Ottomans and the battle of Gallipoli, I thought about this youtube video. It’s really informative and interesting and goes into the military strategy of mining the Dardanelles Strait and the defense plan of the third corps.
